June 23 Newsletter
We have had some really great weather this month. Sometimes, during the day, it has been too bright for photography; that is when it is good to find a shaded area, such as a wood, to go to, find water with reflections, or do something indoors. However, sunset offers a huge variety of shots that are possible. By careful use of Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO, we can, 'Allow', the true colours of the sunset, to show.
The following images have not been enhanced in any way, they have gone through Lightroom, only to change them from RAW files to JPEGS. Nothing else has been done to them.
If you wish to learn how to take shots like these, come on one of my courses and I will teach you how it is done. (Your camera must have the ability to shoot in MANUAL mode).
Most of the images were shot using a 90mm prime lens, the Blazing Sky shots were taken with a 24-70mm lens, set at 24mm.
All the above images, except the very first one, were taken from the back of Shieldbank Farm, looking towards the Ochil Hills. All of these images were taken this month between 9.00pm and 9.45pm, except for the last one, which was taken last night at 11.15pm in the Blue Hour after the sun has gone down.
It is obvious that all the shots were taken directly into the sun without any filters on the lens. This is something that we are told that we should not do. I will let the results speak for themselves. All the shots were taken in manual mode working all the three settings, Shutter, Aperture and ISO, until I achieved the desired effect. Some of the time I exposed for the sky and let the foreground stay in shadow, but equally often I brightened the exposure to show the foreground to show the perspective and scale of the shot.
I find that it is possible to get, totally different, but equally good shots whether there is cloud or clear skies. As can be seen above, the atmosphere created is totally unique for each shot.
The vista that we have here at Shieldbank is vast, if anyone would like to take advantage of it your are very welcome. Please just let me know that you are coming along. Our coffee shop is currently open on Wednesdays till 9.00pm and the car park is always open.
I am adding some shots that were taken at different times of the year. Some of these have been very lightly edited in Lightroom. I am not really in favour of editing an image till it looks overly false. I prefer to stick to letting the viewer see what the scene really looked like.
Now that the really bright weather has gone, for the moment, we have got rain, so I am off to find what could be a good subject to shoot in the rain.
See you all next month. Vic
